Poster Set: Hebrew – a Language that Connects Us (January 2024)

The Academy of the Hebrew Language and the Zionist Council in Israel are offering this poster set for free (shipping fees apply) for schools and public institutions. The set contains 20 illustrated A3-size posters prepared specially for Hebrew Language Day 5784, whose theme is “Hebrew – a Language that Connects Us.”

For the poster project we approached 20 people – men, women, adolescents – whose lives were shaken by the war and asked each of them to choose a Hebrew word that gives voice and meaning to the current period, one that can offer inspiration during these days. The posters display the words they chose and the explanations they provided; they reflect intense emotions, social feelings, national sensibilities. Together they form a mosaic that captures this time. Original illustrations accompany the words and invite further reflection on meaning.

The 20 contributors, all of them examples of the beauty of Israeli society, are:

Hila Shai, whose son Yaron, a Nahal commando fighter, fell protecting Kerem Shalom; Sigi Cohen and Meirav Leshem Gonen, whose children Eliya Cohen and Romi Gonen were abducted from the music festival at Re’im; Lieutenant A, Corporal Ron Ben-Ezra, and Superintendent Mali Shoshana, who fought in the fierce battles on October 7; Meidan Vanunu and Ori Hefetz, high-school students evacuated from their homes in the north and in the south; Rachel Edri, a resident of Ofakim, and Tamar Ben-Zvi, a resident of Be’eri; Alon Davidi, mayor of Sderot, and Haim Jelin of Be’eri, former head of the Eshkol Regional Council; Robin Hettleman Weinberg, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington; physicians Dr. Shira Harpaz-Galili who joined the national effort to identify the dead, and Dr. Lior Fuchs of the Intensive Care Unit at Soroka Medical Center; Tzahi Lev-Ran and Yossi Malul, who helped out in education and agriculture; Colonel (res.) Said Abd Elhak, one of the founders of the Druze Warrior House; journalist and news anchor Danny Kushmaro; and pro-Israel activist and advocate Yoseph Haddad.

The poster set is free (limited to three sets per institution).
