Studies in Language XXXVII

This book brings together twenty of Dr. Alexei Eliyahu Yuditsky’s studies, which were published over a period of about fifteen years on various platforms. They include groundbreaking innovations, such as the identification and publication of new scrolls from the Judean Desert Scrolls, a first-of-its-kind study of the grammar of the Hebrew transcriptions of the Church Father Jerome (fifth century CE), and the solution to the riddle of the origin of a manuscript from the Ripoll Monastery in Spain that contains Hebrew names transcribed in Latin and Greek letters.

These innovations shed new light on the grammar of Hebrew throughout its periods and enrich our knowledge of the pronunciation and forms of Biblical and Mishnah Hebrew, the Samaritan tradition of Hebrew, the worldview of the people of Qumran, the relations between Christians and Jews after the destruction of the Second Temple, and much more.

Dr. Alexei Eliyahu Yuditsky has been the head of the section for modern Hebrew literature at the Historical Dictionary Project of the Academy of the Hebrew Language since 2022. He began his career at the Academy of the Hebrew Language in 2009, and from 2018 to 2022 he served as the head of the section for ancient Hebrew literature. To date, Dr. Yuditsky has published about sixty articles and other scientific publications; twenty of them are included in this book. In 2017, his book “The Hebrew Grammar of Origen’s Transcriptions” was published in the “Sources and Studies” series of the Academy of the Hebrew Language.
